Disclosed contracts — where the number comes from

The calculation
714,702 contracts
What goes in
Each contract is counted once, across the whole federal contract disclosure: modifications (amendments) do not make one more contract. 204,495 modification (amendment) lines counted apart — such a line can be a contract's retained line; 300,247 contracts with no published type, not counted. They come from 97 federal organisations; 147,503 published supplier names, no business identity. The federal organizations with at least one of these contracts. Each supplier name, as the disclosure publishes it on the retained line of each contract, counts once; names on the contract's other lines do not count. Names are not merged: two spellings of the same company count twice. A contract with no supplier name adds none.

Trends — where the number comes from

What goes in

Which sectors are heating up — where the number comes from

What goes in
Each sector's gap to the federal market's movement, in points, disclosure quarter by disclosure quarter. A sector rising like everyone else is neutral; one rising more is hot. colder than the markethotter than the market The market row is each quarter's gap to its own mean; sector rows are their own gap minus the market's. 8 complete disclosure quarters; the current quarter is not disclosed yet. Counted in disclosed contracts (each contract counted once, amendments apart), by disclosure quarter: the source publishes quarterly, months after signature. The sector comes from the source's code, under the contracts rule; 102,617 contracts without a sector are outside the rows. No row or column totals. Seasonality is not removed: eight quarters are not enough to estimate it, and disclosure does not follow the buying season. 2,812 rows with a malformed quarter are off the axis.
